Osa Mystica

PRESERVING THE LAND

PROTECTING THE CREATURES

Extraordinary biodiversity of wildlife and plant life,              the Osa Pennisula

In the SW corner of Costa Rica lies the wettest region of the country, the Osa Peninsula. Where a neotropical rainforest inhabits a greater variety of species than almost anywhere else on our planet.  This is the home of the jaguar, trunk-nosed tapirs, giant Blue Morpho butterflies, brilliant scarlet macaws, and countless other magnificent species, many we have yet to identify.

Humans must improve upon ways to engage with nature that protect and preserve, not destroy and consume. We plan to do our part at Osa Mystica.

The Vision

OSA MYSTICA ORGANIZATION

The Osa Mystica Organization was created to acquire and provide guardianship to selected tracts of tropical rainforest in Costa Rica to maintain and protect healthy ecosystems, or rehabilitate unhealthy ones, in order to maximize the biodiversity within those tracts for the benefit of all life forms that live there.

The land we oversee will not be purposed as a resource for people but rather as a place to protect a healthy ecosystem.  Our goal is for our involvement, or any other human involvement within Osa Mystica, to be a net positive one for the property’s inhabitants.

Environmental Organizations

COSTA RICAN ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS WE ADMIRE

Refugio Tinti - Golfito, Costa Rica

Our aim is to guide communities to operate in harmony with nature. The development of modern technologies over the last 200 years has led to an ongoing exclusion of humans from natural cycles. This has disastrous consequences for our biosphere, which is why we dedicate our work to reconcile human societies with natural environments.

Nature Conservancy - Costa Rica

Costa Rica is an environmental conservation leader and has shown the world that it’s possible to thrive without damaging the environment. That is one reason The Nature Conservancy has worked from the outset to support national efforts to safeguard the country’s forests, and why it chose Costa Rica as the site of its first international operation, where it continues to work tirelessly to this day.

Casa Orquideas Jardin Botanico - Golifto, Costa Rica

From colorful flowers to unique plants and trees, Mother Nature puts on a real show at Casa Orquideas Botanical Garden. You'll be wowed by the variety of plant species and the work that's gone into the displays

Kids Saving the Rainforest - Costa Rica

We believe that the rainforest is a storehouse of treasures, we vow to do everything we can to save it. With the vanishing rainforest goes the future of our planet. We have to be the generation that makes a difference!

The People

JOVIAN HOSKO AND TERI LOU DANTZLER

For over 15 years, the Golfo Dulce and the Osa Peninsula has been tempting us to settle here. To make it our home and environmental project hub.

We have been patient, awaiting the right time to fully retire from medical practice and purchase the best property. Hopefully, the Osa is ready to accept us as its stewards.

Once our home is established, we plan to partner with other organizations that provide animal rehabilitation, breeding of endangered species, and ethical research.

Jovian fell in love with the Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica in 1989 when he backpacked along a warm and stormy beach from the village of Carate into Corcovado National Park.

He had his first close encounter with a tapir, anxiously walked aside a squadron of peccary, and saw his first scarlet macaws living,  as they should, in nature.  On that day he fell in love with the Osa and decided to put efforts into protecting it from human exploitation.

Teri Lou was introduced to the region more recently. Her first visit was soon followed by visits to other rain forests in Costa Rica and the South American Amazon.

With each visit her desire to learn more about how to protect Mother's Earth's creations grew. She now dreams of growing garden's they will eat from, listening and observing nature at its best and inviting others who want to ethically study the environment to visit.

How to help the environment

One family at a time

Here are 5 ways that each of us can do to help the environment.

1. EAT LESS MEAT, MORE PLANTS

As vegan's we are very aware that industrial agriculture and factory farmed meat is bad for the environment.

By adopting a more sustainable diet: cut down or eliminate meats, grow or get most of your food from local farmers who use sustainable practices, and eat more whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and nuts .

This action will help reduce GHG emissions, decrease deforestation, and protect our global freshwater supply.

It's also good for your health!

2. BUY LESS STUFF

Overconsumption of cheaply made, single-use good, that is often plastic is destroying the planet.

Research how to live and adopt habits that reduces waste. Purchase long-lasting items or eco friendly ones, and thinking about the entire life cycle of each item you buy. Don't think that plastics are recycled the way we are told to believe.

"Only 9 percent of the plastics made since they were first mass-produced in the mid-1900s have been recycled." The Plastic Coalition Org.

3. REDUCE WATER WASTE

Have a leaky faucet? You could be dripping 90 gallons of water down the drain, daily.

If you aren’t sure how to fix it, there are lots of  YouTube video for that!

Also, STOP buying bottled water. The micro plastics are bad for you. Did you know one million plastic drinking bottles every minute are being. used worldwide?

For a better solution, install a filter on your tap or on your reusable water bottle.

Please find more ways how cut water consumption.

4. SUPPORT RENEWABLE ENERGY

Fossil fuels pollute the earth. Over the next few decades, global energy demand is expected to increase by at least 56%.

We need to shift 85% of the world’s energy supply to non fossil-fuel sources to comply with the Paris Agreement.

We plan to have solar, wind and water as our power sources while living along the Golfito Dulce.

5. PLANT TREES AND VEGETABLE GARDENS!

Reforestation has consistently ranked as a #1 climate change solution, because trees are capable of absorbing carbon from the atmosphere.

Healthy forests give wildlife a home, provide food, hold soil together, clean the air, provide medicines, and so much more.

Planting organic gardens and using organic farming practices are better for the environment.

Donating all proceeds from sale of Artistic Photography

Giving in the most creative of ways.

Here is just a sample of images from Jovian's website TheWild.Life

An environmentalist in childhood, Jovian's first animal activism was at age 6 when he protected tiny crawdads from being stepped on by neighborhood boys. Later, while always keeping his sights on wilderness adventure opportunities, he attended countless wildlife and environment rallies, achieved Eagle Scout status, and went on to specialize in wilderness canoe training as an Explorer Scout.

For 35 years his “after work” activities consisted of scrambling gorges and summiting volcanic peaks in Oregon where he lives.  He spent many month-long solo kayak voyages in the archipelagos of British Columbia and SE Alaska occasionally depending fully on fishing and foraging the intertidal zone for food.  When on these adventures Jovian always had his camera.

Soon the adventurer also became the artist and he was spending hours each night compositing his images into creative beauties.

Jovian, has pledged to donate all proceeds from the sale of his artworks to environmental organizations.
